The Heroes' Reprieve
My toes sank slightly in a rolling sea of green.
As per the local custom, I chose to forgo my shoes, the recent tilling and rainfall stretching up my legs with each step.
I’d never left my small island- could hardly fathom the seemingly infinite continent that neighbored my homeland.
The humble halfling village of Trann’t nestled in the crook of a valley like a healthy child in her mother’s arms. Aptly so, as children raced across my path, mothers trailing behind to watch them climb mighty olive trees.
Unable to help myself, I flopped down on a patch of grass, embracing the petrichor fully at my back. Rosemary, dried and forgotten from passing harvesters, clung to my clothes. I welcomed it like a companion.
This land and its residents were life itself made tangible- a life so much calmer from the restless excitement of the island. It felt small and endless all at once.
Tiny homes bloomed from the gentle slopes, an impossible blend of lavish and quaint with gardens and chittering neighbors spilling out of every nook. The air itself tinged with mint; fresh and green and pure.
The obsidian blade sheathed at my hip warmed, not from the springtime sun, but the searing heat that churned deep in the earth, in my veins.
My eyes snapped open, hand at its hilt, only to be met with a small hand extending towards me. A curly-haired halfling watching me with eyes like ancient stars, laugh lines etched deeply in his face.
The village archivist, beloved and envied for his trove of relics, passed down through long-lived generations. Most notably, an urn from my island said to house the body of a god.
Following the halfling's lead, I hoisted myself to my feet, taking the first true steps towards my traitorous patron.
